The land has grown dark. Nearly three thousand years have passed since the legendary Battle of Dagorlad and the Siege of Barad-dur, in which Isildur, taking up his father’s broken sword, Narsil, cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. Sauron has fled Mirkwood and cast aside his guise as the Necromancer of Dol Guldur, rekindling the fires of Mount Doom. The Dark Lord has begun to rebuild his stronghold of Barad-dur and to amass armies of war, numerous Orcs, Trolls, and evil men- Easterlings and Haradrim.
Having recently captured and tortured Gollum for information regarding the whereabouts of his Ring of Power, Sauron’s eye has now become fixed on the quiet and peaceful Hobbit-inhabited land known as The Shire in western Eriador. It is now January in the year 3018 of the Third Age and Aragorn, son of Arathorn, is hunting for the creature Gollum at Gandalf the Grey’s urgent wishes. It is their hope to discover more information regarding the ring Bilbo Baggins had acquired from the dreadful creature during his quest to the Lonely Mountain.
